For the
first year
our email update featured a new cartoon every month that aimed to convey something of the
challenges and frustrations we face in Mozambique. We take a lot of things for
granted in the UK but anyone coming out to Africa discovers that nothing is ever
straight forward
Excess Baggage
Taking a family of six
overseas entails a lot of luggage and we turned up at the airport with
three trolley loads. Remarkably we were within the limit for hold
baggage but we hoped that no one took too close a look at the amount of
our hand luggage.
Hot Ironing
Gregory got more than
he bargained for when he offered to help with the ironing. His
thermostat overheated so that he managed to burn the clothes and scorch
the ironing board. Then just to make matters even worse, the plastic
housing melted and the iron fell apart.
Public Transport
Each morning starts
with a brisk walk to the main road where we flag down a chapa, a
commuter minibus. The only rule seems to be that the bus conductor can
always squeeze in one more - no matter how many people are already
in the chapa.
Potty Training
Even missionary kids have to learn the basics of life. Two year old Samuel is
reminding his parents that toilet training is so much pot luck.
Bilingual Ability
Samuel's speech is coming along in
leaps and bounds. He can now express his frustrations in English or
Portuguese.
River Crossing
In the absence of a bridge, you have
to cross a river any way you can - although preferably not by log
raft!
Monopoly
Trying to get the right papers to the
right person in the right place can feel like a grown up version of
Monopoly
Partial Communication
Even with daily language study we
continue to make mistakes, to misunderstand people and be
misunderstood
Heading to Canaan
At last we are ready to
head north to Tete ... why does this remind me of a
certain Biblical patriarch?
Travel Map
Are
we there yet? Highlights of our three day trek from
Maputo to Tete
The Church Run
Getting to church on a
Sunday can be a bit of an ordeal
Watch your Step
Don't tread on the snakes,
cross the river in the hollowed out log, dodge the
crocodiles, swat the mosquitoes - all in a day's work!
